The Singleton Argus is reporting that the NSW Department of Planning and Environment is seeking feedback on a proposal by Peabody Energy in the Hunter Valley which will extend the life of one of its mine operations by seven years.
The extension of Wambo Coal Mine’s under ground operations would involve extracting an extra 18 million tonnes of coal from nine additional underground longwalls.
This would extend the life of the mine near Warkworth until 2039.
A spokesperson from the department said community consultation is an important part of the planning process and anyone can provide feedback before the exhibition close date of Tuesday 2 May.
“We encourage people to give feedback on the application. All submissions from members of the public, community interest groups, and relevant government agencies will be considered during our assessment,” a spokesperson said.
